ACC basketball season preview

A team-by-team look at the ACC heading into the 2022–23 season

Just five ACC teams reached the men’s NCAA Tournament last season, the conference’s lowest total number of representatives since 2013. But even in a clear down year, the ACC accounted for 37.5% of the Elite Eight and half the Final Four.

Storylines abound heading the 2022–23 season, from North Carolina likely starting out as the No. 1 team in the country to Jon Scheyer patrolling the sidelines at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Here is a team-by-team preview of the conference.

Boston College

Notable returners: Makai Ashton-Langford (12.0 PPG, 3.4 APG, 3.9 RPG), DeMarr Langford Jr. (11.3 PPG, 2.2 APG, 4.8 RPG), Quinten Post (9.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 50.2 FG%), Jaeden Zackery (10.4 PPG, 2.7 APG, 47.7 3PT%)

Notable additions: Prince Aligbe, Donald Hand, Mason Madsen (3.9 PPG, 1.3 RPG, 36.3 3PT% at Cincinnati)

Notable departures: Brevin Galloway (8.3 PPG, 1.4 APG, 1.5 RPG), James Karnick (9.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 55.8 FG%)

Season in review: Boston College started the season 6–3 with wins over South Florida and Notre Dame before going 6–14 in ACC play under first-year coach Earl Grant. The Golden Eagles lost in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament to finish with a 13–20 record, a nine-win improvement from 2020–21.

Number to know: 5.5

Boston College’s opponents shot 5.5% better from three than the Golden Eagles did. They were 299th in the country in 3-point percentage (30.9%) and 319th (36.4%) in 3-point defense.

Outlook: Grant returns five of his seven leading scorers and adds two four-star recruits in Aligbe and Hand, plus a threat from the perimeter in Madsen. A soft nonconference schedule should give an improved team plenty of wins early on, and there’s enough talent to stay out of the ACC cellar. Anything more than that would be a pleasant surprise.

NCAA Tournament hopes: Dangling by a thread

Clemson

Notable returners: PJ Hall (15.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.3 BPG), Hunter Tyson (10.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 34.7 3PT%)
