Reflective Journal

NOV 15th

Since I had my reflective journal completely deleted from my computer this is a second version of it, reflecting from week to week instead of day to day.

SEPT 11th-15th

This week has been all about figuring out what to do with this final project. I actually have no idea. I’m scribbling on my sketchbook until I find something which is something I learned from artist Jake Parker. He says, if you don’t know what to do, scribble until you find something, draw shapes and try to mix them up to the point where you can see something there and then just go with it. So that’s basically what I’ve been doing and I got some really nice characters designs that I could use for some stories, but I have to think about it.

SEPT 18th-22nd

Last week I drew some characters on my sketchbook and I’ve had this frog character which right after I did it, I just thought to myself: I could draw him a million times, as many as needed. Then all of a sudden, this stories started to come up and I started to ask myself: where does he come from, does he have a family, does he have friends, what is his purpose in life? Just like that, Froggo was born.

Now that I know what to do, I’ve made a time table so Froggo can become real. It’s going to be a comic book and I guess the first step is to write a script so I can settle the whole story.

I’ve had a hard time writing it since I’m not used to write things down, so I tried to write it in small portions so I wouldn’t have to think of the big picture, but that just didn’t worked out… Finally I decided to research and see how other artists did it and I found out that most of them draw while they write, it’s like a primitive stage of storyboard and it worked out perfectly. I got to finish the script right on time (SEPT 22nd).

SEPT 25th-29th

This week is dedicated to create all the other characters that are going to appear on the comic book and all the environments. It’s easy for me to create the characters, but I’ve been having a hard time designing the environments. I fell like every place I try to create, turns out to empty or maybe with no character at all. I’m looking at all sorts of environment designs from artist I love, like Jake Parker, Moebius and Andrew Maclean to see how they manage to give life to a place or a room.

I realized that copying their environments was a good exercise, just a simple copy can make my brain understand the process behind it and then I can use a mix of all the different things I’m learning from this artists to develop my thing.

OCT 2nd-6th

I’m supposed to have the finished version of the story, so I am about to finish it and to see if it’s good and appealing, I’ll be letting some of my friends which are an example of my target public know about the story and then receive the critics so I can Trim some edges and get the best version of the story I’m trying to tell.

It worked out well so far, everyone enjoyed listening to it and they’re all very curious to know how it will end, I’m confident with the script I’ve done and now I just have to star the storyboard to make it happen.

OCT 9th-13th

I need to have all final designs for my characters and environments until the end of this week and it’s been easy so far, at least with the main characters and I think that’s because I really got deep into them and their qualities, not so much with the secondary ones. It’s hard to give a face to someone you don’t know anything about, with Froggo and all the primary characters is easy because I know how they think, I see them in my mind. So I decided to create some of the secondary and leave the less important ones to develop as I create the storyboard and trim them when doing the final pages.

OCT 16th-20th

I could never imagine that creating the storyboard would be so hard. It’s hard to put all the information into little sketches and try to imagine if it’s going to work out when it gets bigger and finished. It is my first comic book ever thou… I’m pretty sure that the next one will be much easier to make, because I’ll already know what works and what doesn’t.

For now I’ll just finish the storyboard until the end of the week so I don’t get behind my schedule.

OCT 23rd-27th

I was supposed to have the storyboard finished by now, but that just wasn’t possible since I’ve been having trouble figuring out how to make it dynamic and still tell the whole story. I guess I’ll just have to start the final pages a week later and I’ll have to do them as I do all the merchandise I planed to do.

I’ve been looking at storyboards of other artists and how they do it to clear my head, I’ve also been reading some new comics and some old ones too that I think that have a good and understandable storytelling to them, I’m hoping to get some inspiration out of this and maybe finish this before the week ends.
