Light the Way

How to Create Your Own Luck In 6 Steps

Use process improvement techniques so that serendipity finds you

The past decade has taught me that consistent and intentional actions are the greatest drivers of serendipity. Making a simple commitment to purposeful action and maintaining follow-through is like positioning yourself for luck.

It’s easy to think of luck as a binary outcome. Either something good happens or something bad. It’s an act of fate, something outside of our control. We hope to be exposed to good luck and good fortune, an event that changes our lives for the better. Like winning the lottery. On the flip side, we pray that we avoid bad luck such as getting diagnosed with cancer.

But that’s not what luck is.

Luck is the chance that a particular outcome or event will come to pass. When you view luck as an event-driven process or outcome, it’s easier to explore what impacts the outcomes. Taking a closer look at luck, I’ve come to realize that it’s not always fate that is at play.

Luck is an element of statistics.

To be clear, luck is an element of probability. It’s the chance that a less common outcome will come to pass. In terms of probability, luck is the small percentage of uncommon outcomes. Sometimes, that number is extremely small.

With a low probability of success, influencing an outcome can seem like an impossible task. But it’s important to think of luck as probabilistic because you can influence the outcome.

Forget fate and what is not in your control. Instead, focus on incremental improvement. Using intentional and consistent action you can gradually shift the probability of an outcome.
