Power of Silence

Today we live in a technology driven world that requires exchange of words in all walks of life. Words are expressions of our thoughts and emotions that carry energy which determines our behaviour. We often find time to connect with everyone else but not ourselves. Although we talk only during verbal exchanges, our minds don’t stop talking.

How do we train our minds to stop chattering so that we can be more focussed and productive in our lives?

Most of us have drawn inspiration from the power of words of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln,JF Kennedy and many more.

Where did these great leaders derive this incredible power to attract and empower millions of people around the world?

Today I am going to share about the power of silence.

What is Silence ?

Silence does not mean just keeping our mouth shut.It is a state of mind that is free from distractions and connects us directly to a higher dimension which has unlimited potential. This process energizes the mind and opens doors to access our infinite potential.

Solitude is often thought to be a suffering and we try to fill this space by connecting with others and neglecting ourselves totally.

What are the benefits of Silence?

It has been scientifically proven that silence can reduce stress and anxiety in our life as well as activate certain parts of the brain to develop creativity, will power, courage and decision making capabilities in our life.

Is there a technique that can help us get into this state of mind?

The simple technique that can help us connect us to ourselves is bringing our awareness while breathing in and breathing out.

Taking time to breathe in and breath out can regulate our minds gradually to enter the state of stillness. This technique can be practised anytime and anywhere in our life right from waiting at the traffic signal to resolving conflicts at home or office.

Now that we have understood about this simple technique ,let me share an example of how i applied this simple practise in my parenting adventure with my daughter when she was 2 years old.

Everyday morning, we had an alarm without a snooze button that used to ring continuously. Did you guess it? Yes, it was that loud shrieking voice from a tiny body that tends to annoy us and make us go crazy.

We had tried multiple ways to snooze this alarm, but nothing succeeded. So one day, i decided to talk to my daughter. I took a deep breath and sat next to her while she was dedicatedly doing her routine job of crying. I detached myself from her with no emotions and asked her why she was crying. She stopped crying for few seconds and said because I want to CRYYYYY. I just nodded my head, took a breath again. A wonderful idea struck me. I asked her if she was willing to play a challenge with me until Easter and she agreed.

I told her the rules of the challenge. Every morning when you wake up ,can you blow air into an imaginary balloon and pop it when you feel like crying and you will be rewarded with a prize if you win the challenge. She agreed as she loved balloons. Next day, as I had got so habituated listening to our house alarm that wakes us up, I waited for the alarm but to my surprise I saw that my daughter woke up quietly with a beautiful smile .

Little did i imagine, that this simple exercise would dramatically change my mornings.

So, my dear friends let’s make use of this opportunity to find some time to practise silence and derive our true strength to succeed in life.

We no longer have to run to quiet places for solitude. When we discover that solitude is a state of mind, that when established can help us accept us as we are and connect us with ourselves to realize our true potential.

Let’s all try to find some time to connect with ourselves and transform within us and around the world.

Silence isn’t empty . It’s full of answers — Gautama Buddha
