Social Media vs Journalism

Journalism has changed a lot over the years. The biggest altercation to the Journalism world has been the introduction of the internet. With the internet came digital culture. Social media began taking the world by storm. Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites have become many peoples main source of news, which has changed Journalism forever.

As shown in the graph above, social media has become a main source of news. The ability to share things instantaneously on social media platforms creates a perfect outlet for news because consumers want to know what is happening in real time.

The story about the plane landing in the Hudson River first broke on twitter from a witness. Social media is changing the way news is shared and is making it more competitive for news outlets to be the first to break a story. Traditional news is losing momentum and becoming less and less popular.

From the graph above you can see that 71% of 18–29 year-old Americans use the Internet as their main source of news. This is larger than Television by 20%. In addition, 83% of Twitter users see news on Twitter and 59% will retweet a headline. These numbers are changing the way the public consumes news.

This tweet gives just one the reasons why a lot of journalists do not like the way twitter and other social media platforms are changing the way news is reported.

This tweet pokes humor at the fact how some people do not do enough research when it comes to online news.

Overall, journalism has changed drastically because of social media and will continue to change as social media grows.
