Wish we were not slack

Its been a couple of weeks since I have taken a sabbatical from routine office work and I am already feeling lazy. But the desperation to do something also creeps in now and then.

There is an air of slumber around me, just like my mobile network which shows up on my phone as and when it wishes. The other day I was following up with the human resource guy in my company with regards to some documents required for tax filing purposes. After pestering him for over two weeks he gave in and told me that he had already sent it by post. So I told him that I hadn’t received anything yet , so if he could share the courier details with me, so that I could track it at my end and not bother him any longer. He replied back saying that he would check up and let me know. As expected he never got back and now bravo the usual slackness has come into play,he has stopped taking my calls. And I am still waiting….

The thing that baffles me here is, why is it so arduous for him to tell me the exact date by when the work would be done, I think he must have enjoyed the merry go around a lot during his childhood , and he might just be reliving his childhood by making me go around him in circles. But unfortunately he is not the only one suffering from this syndrome of slackness, which is the art of being busy without doing anything and the cherry on the cake is that people like him are getting paid for it.

There is a significant section in society which follows this principle that no work and all play will make Jack a smart boy , apparently these people enjoy this trait of theirs and always like being a part of the crowd. The only inference I can draw from this is that they love to live their lives in oblivion , going unnoticed by not contributing anything whatever might happen. A famous saying states that “A crowd has no face”, so these slack creatures satisfy their egos by hiding in the crowd.

There are various surveys which are conducted by very prestigious world organisations round the year about India and they all come out with positive conclusions like India has risen in the world rankings for the ease of doing business, the world wants to invest more with us, India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and we would soon be a superpower in the near future.

All this without doubt is great to listen to and every Indian must be instilled with a sense of pride after hearing this, but it seems like the world is looking at us with rose tinted glasses . As a question arises in my mind, how are the people who don’t want to do their own work and who keep shying away at every opportunity they get, going to contribute in the progress of the nation. Because after all it is the people who drive the nation forward ,if every citizen will do their own work sincerely then only the country will move in the right direction. Otherwise the people who are already working towards the well being of the country by playing more than their part would be overburdened, after a particular threshold they might fall down like a house of cards under sustained pressure which would pile on, not because they are doing something wrong but because of others not wanting to do anything.

I hope some day this attitude of slackness goes out of our society , which somehow seems ingrained in us and instead we emulate the Japenese for the way they conduct themselves, by taking a leaf out of their book. The Japanese are the epitome of hardwork and pride they take in representing their country. The most recent example being the way the Japanese football team after their loss in the world cup quarter finals , cleaned up their locker room and left a small note thanking FIFA for the great experience they had. They were duly appreciated around the world by one and all who came to know of it. This small gesture of the team brought accolades not for a particular individual but for the entire nation of Japan that to at the world stage.

I am keeping my fingers crossed , maybe someday we will see a sea change in this lackadaisical approach which we somehow as a nation have become accustomed to.
