Depression is a word often misused to explain day-to-day innate feelings. Heartbroken? I am depressed. Had an awful week at work? I am depressed.

How then do you distinguish between depression and experiencing the normal grief experienced in life?

It is human nature to feel sad and alone, especially when dealing with grief, personal struggles, and loss. However, prolonged periods of sadness and affecting your physical and emotional health, you may be depressed.

Depression is complex, it is a constant unshakable dark feeling that outlives normal grief. It makes daily routines, thoughts, feelings, and human interactions feel like torture.

Hopelessness- You feel stuck in the present. The future you envisioned looks equally dark and bleak. Self-hate, shame, guilt, and lack of confidence. If left unchecked, these feelings could lead to thoughts of suicide.

Fatigue and sleep problems– Depression presents itself by feeling exhaustion, lethargy, and fatigue even when you have done nothing. Basic routine activities such as eating and showering become exhausting. Additionally, you may experience periods of insomnia or excessive sleeping, leaving you feeling sluggish and anxious.

Weight loss and/or weight gain- Food may become your refuge to avoid dealing with difficult emotions. Food escapism may be either manifest by overeating or under-eating. Consequently, you gain or lose substantial weight over a short period.

Uncontrollable emotions- Uncontrollable extreme emotions can be a sure sign of depression. Experiencing extreme highs in one minute and extreme lows in the next is common. The lack of emotional control is frustrating and both physically and mentally exhausting.

Reckless behavior- A naturally responsible and careful person may find themselves engaging in distracting behaviors such as dangerous sports, gambling, reckless driving, drug abuse, and dangerous sports to escape the constant feeling of powerlessness.

Loss of interest- The things you once enjoyed, hobbies, interests, and relationships become insignificant and unappealing. You lose interest in human interaction and you would rather retreat into your misery than attempt something you previously enjoyed.

Depression can manifest in countless forms. The above are pointers to the common signs but are not in any way conclusive.

People can pull themselves from mild depression. However, severe depression requires assistance from a mental health professional to get through.
