There is no free lunch.. or vacation!

(This is part of my Daily Opinion Minute Series.)

If there is one thing that is clear from life as an adult, it is- there is no free lunch! Every action you take comes with a trade-off and a pro-con baggage you automatically sign up for. Of course, most of the time you don’t think about the baggage (except if you are a productivity blogger, then you start pointing out things like: the thirty evening minutes of Netflix before sleeping are thirty minutes you could read a book or listen to a course lecture. Anyway, I digress!)

The point is almost every action you take has a cost.

Then again, it kinda makes sense if you think about it. Most people younger than 40 today consider travel an almost mandatory part of taking a break. It is a cultural no-no to claim not to like travel, so much so that you have probably not heard of anyone other than your grandmother say it! It is assumed almost axiomatically that traveling every now and then will refresh and rejuvenate you and help you tackle your daily problems better.

Given the almost taken-for-granted nature of these ideas, it is no surprise that everyone who can afford to travels as often as they possibly can. That should scale to a pretty large number of people flying in and out of cities, renting cars and generally consuming a lot of energy that wouldn’t have been consumed if they had stayed home. So, ya the numbers add up! (See what I did there!)

Now what? As conscientious denizens of the world, do we not vacation anymore?

I see two solutions here: a) energy-efficient travel (basically trying to minimize flying, using public transport at your destination, combining multiple trips if possible, etc.) b) automotive innovation (basically waiting for Elon Musk to do something about it.. he.. he.. )

So, until then, you can feel a little better that by sitting at your dreary workplace and not globetrotting like Insta celebrities, you are doing the planet a favor!
