Japan 2050 vol. 2

Japanese government has set a goal for the country to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The existing project of the developer Japan Pipeline Development Organization (JPDO) of the Sakhalin-Japan gas pipeline looks interesting. Preliminary surveys were carried out by the American companies Texaco (technical, economic, legal and environmental studies), United Technology (development of the gas pipeline route). The interests of the project are the Ministry of State Lands and Transport, Hokkaido Development Bureau, Japanese Road Agency, Hokkaido Governorate, and Japanese Cabinet of Ministers.

Sakhalin-Japan gas pipeline project consists of three stages of a pipeline along the Sakhalin →Wakkanai →Nayoro →Asahikawa →Sapporo →Tomakomai →Mutsu →Ogawara →Hachinohe route and then laying the pipeline throughout Japan (by analogy with the European gas transmission system). Total cost of the project is $1.274 billion.

The ongoing discussion about possibility of applying technologies for the transportation of gas for hydrogen allows us to consider the project of this gas pipeline as a preliminary applied tool in favour of the implementation of a project for the production of green hydrogen based on geothermal renewable energy and the creation of a network for widespread use in the domestic market of Japan. Already existing technologies and equipment for the generation of geothermal energy, corporate policy of the flagships of the Japanese industry (Nippon Steel, Toyota, etc) to invest in the development of hydrogen technologies for their needs, together with the state program of Japan, inspire optimism about the prospects for achieving the results of Japan’s ambitious plans for zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
