A date that will live in infamy.

Most will recognize the quote above as the opening of President Franklin Roosevelt’s description of the attack on Pearl Harbor. In fact, this word gets misused a lot. Just this morning I heard a…

Introducing Fog

Advanced Private Transactions On The Ethereum Network

FOG is an ERC20-compliant token used in a system that implements zk-SNARKs encryption methodology and a self-regulating token mixing smart contract known as the Fog Internal Mixer, or Intermix. This allows FOG tokens to be sent between users without leaving breadcrumbs that can be traced back to the users with blockchain analysis tools. This is known as the Fog Protocol and will be entirely open source. The intention of Fog is to unify the underlying technology behind Zcash and the abilities and security of Ethereum. By doing this Fog creates a modern payment method that is both extraordinarily private and accessible, and easily integrated into modern web3 dApps and wallets. Sending FOG is as easy as sending ETH and the Fog Wallet is the first use-case of the Fog Protocol. The sender simply inputs an amount of FOG to send and a receiving address into the wallet and the Fog Protocol handles everything else automatically. It uses zk-SNARKs to shield the transaction information and sends it privately to the Intermix, which mixes the tokens with the reserve token pool (a constant 12.5 million FOG) and sends fresh tokens to the receiving address. Any link between sender and receiver is completely and permanently hidden. As a smart contract, the Intermix can never be altered or shut down, and no identifying information can ever be visible.

There currently exists a slew of various cryptocurrencies on the market. Each have various approaches and techniques they use to answer the question of, “how to best enable people to transact in a way that keeps prying eyes out of their business?” To an extent, they have succeeded. However, none come close to the sheer size of the Ethereum network. Decentralization and a strong network are crucial to the security of a privacy-centric coin. Users will be able to store FOG on any ERC20-compatible wallet currently on the market, including hardware wallets like Ledger and Trezor, and usability is a major flaw that the current privacy-centric coins suffer greatly from. Fog Protocol integration will allow wallet providers to give its users a way to transact privately, and, as always, the more options for users the better.
