Angel describes her emotions toward her brothers as being heartbroken and being pissed off at the same time. How can her brothers make those decisions that impacted them, impacted Angel, her sister, their parents, his children? Angel describes difficulties being empathetic with her brothers. We had a conversation about emotions and how much stronger they are when it comes to family. Angel kept saying it just pisses her off. There are a lot of emotions going on. Nobody wants to lose any part of their family because of addiction or anything else. We both felt that there is more anger probably because there is more love and emotional attachment to a family member. Makes it more personal. Paige described situations when a family does not know what to do with addiction. Her family missed the signs that her stepfather had been drinking. Then her mom had no knowledge or understanding of how to support him when he was sober.

Paige feels that there is a lot of codependency going on between her mother and her stepfather and he does not have a lot of motivation to stop drinking. Her mother does not have the initiative to make that happen either. Paige describes her mother growing up in a dysfunctional family including drinking in the family. Kayla had a similar experience. Her family did not know the signs or what to look for either until the problem of drinking for her father become more apparent. Kayla was away in college when this happened, so she did not see her father all the time. When she would come home for a visit it was “extremely apparent”. Kayla makes a great point that addiction can happen to anybody. Her family was close and still missed the signs. Jason talked about how disturbing it was to see the damage that addiction does to families and the community. It comes down to sadness Jason said, it is just very difficult for the family. It is not something someone can control.

Rory described a situation with a client with his first mental break and psychosis. The client’s mother said yes, he was arrested for mushrooms, and he told her it was for his friends. Was it really for his friends? Rory said of course it was not for his friends. He was using mushrooms and he had his first psychotic break…
