Daily Gift of the Morning

And how to use it to gain the day

I woke up this morning.

I’m assuming you did too.

That alone puts us ahead. That alone gifts us the hours of today. That alone grants us this tenuous, crazy, joyous, sorrowful, uncertain and astonishing gift of another day of life.

Let’s face it. Yesterday may have been crap. Yesterday spiraled into confusion over the smallest things. A late wake-up. The tussle to get the kids to school on time. A missed appointment followed by an unending meeting. A curt remark from a co-worker.

That text sent by your spouse saying he’s been home extra late. An extended work session and no time for lunch. But you push through.

You close out that day. You put your head on your pillow. You quiet the voices. You grasp sleep’s hand.

In the morning, the new day arrives. Sun streams through your blinds. It warms your face. You hear the children chattering and giggling in the kitchen below. The cat jumps onto your leg and settles in. Life comes to you, and you breathe it in. This morning, it feels warm and kind and more willing to…
