They have given him a less desirable speaking slot

Author’s Note: Although I am closely watching the situation in Ukraine, my knowledge of foreign affairs is not deep enough that I feel comfortable commenting on those events. Please know that I stand with Ukraine.

Trump was given the prime speaking slot on Sunday in 2021. You may recall that that was the year of the golden Trump statue in the lobby of the venue. It was a sort of coming out party for him after his humiliating defeat in the 2020 election.

I was wondering if DeSantis had been promoted to a better speaking slot in light of his popularity as a potential presidential candidate in 2024.

Well, DeSantis is still scheduled to speak on the first day of the conference (Thursday, February 24, yesterday as I write this) while Trump has apparently been demoted to a Saturday evening speaking slot.

In 2021, there was a host of distinguished Republican speakers (former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee and former National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow) leading up to Trump’s triumphant address on Sunday evening.

This year his Saturday speech is preceded by a bunch of panels and a speech by Anne Bayefsky, a Fox News opinion writer. Trump’s moment in the spotlight will then be followed by a reception for state lawmakers.

The schedule on Sunday is even lamer. More panels, the straw poll and then a speech by Don Jr. followed by a concert by Lee Greenwood.

What happened?

Trump is billed as a headliner and the star attraction, but it seems a little strange to me to squeeze your star in between a Fox personality and a reception.

I think that Republicans are beginning to wise up. Trump just will not let go of the “rigged” 2020 election while everyone else wants to move on.
