Africans were into African Traditional Religion which had their attendant beliefs before the advent of Christianity which many of them adopted but some of them still held onto the worship of their gods and the traditions of old which have found their way into the everyday life of the people. One thing about these superstitious beliefs is that a lot of people just believe and practice them without questioning their validity.

These beliefs vary from locality to locality in Africa which ranks second in size and population among the continents of the world with 54 countries and 1250-3000 tribes and tongues. Let us look at some of these superstitious beliefs from East Africa.

The people of Kakamega village in western Kenya believe that the geese are gifted with a sixth sense, especially in the area of detecting witches so most families in this village have geese in their compounds which alerts them of the presence of witches when they come around their vicinity so as to take necessary and adequate precautionary measures.

Again in Kenya, it is believed that when the right palm of a person itches, that person is in for an inflow of cash any time soon so they don’t dare scratch the itching palm, they rather scratch the left palm because they believe that scratching the itching palm amounts to scratching away the money about to be received. According to their belief, money finds its way into their hands one way or another. Many other Africans also share this belief.

In Kenya, it is believed that when one comes across an owl it means that something terrible is about to happen to that person or a loved one of that person. The tradition recommends that you are expected to react immediately by either shooing it off or throwing salt into the fire to avert the impending terrible occurrence.
