Why I Think University Is Easier Than High School

How to eliminate stress and perform better.

I have gone through more than three weeks of university now. The question that I have been getting asked the most is, how’s university been going? Many of my co-workers and my parents would often ask me if post-secondary was significantly more difficult to high school.

Everyone would be surprised by my answer.

Yeah, I just quoted myself. The people I have talked to would give me a face of scepticism and say, “No way, maybe it’s just easy in the beginning. But trust me, it’s going to ramp up.”

I would tilt my head to one side and then to the other and say, “Sure.”

I never had time to talk about why I thought going to university was easier than high school seriously, so other people never knew where I was coming from.

Without a chance to directly explain it to the people around me, I might as well write a blog post about it (even if they never see it) to get this ongoing thought out of me.

University is more comfortable than high school, not because the content or workload is more straightforward, but how I changed my perspective on myself and the world around me.

I’ve always gone into school making goals for my marks. “This year, I’m going to get over 90%.”

A lot of students do this. They centre their goals on what they want, not how they’re going to get it.

This year, I didn’t make any goals regarding marks. The only goal I made was to do my best. And that has helped me remain emotionally stable.

When the only thing on your mind is increasing how much you learn and improving how you learn, the marks you get don’t disturb you. The good thing is that even if you mess up on your first few tests and assignments, by focusing on your learning only, your marks will naturally improve.
